During their first meeting under the leadership of the new Council president, EU leaders will tackle a diverse agenda, including discussions on the EU’s global role.
The European Union’s 27 leaders will meet in Brussels on Thursday for their first summit under the leadership of European Council President António Costa.
Expectations are high for Costa, seen as the “anti-[Charles] Michel,” his predecessor whose tenure was marked by controversial behavior. Officials criticized Michel’s handling of leaders’ meetings, Council affairs, and his rivalry with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Costa has already earned goodwill by pledging to limit leaders’ summits to a single day.
However, this positive start could be short-lived, given the weakened positions of France’s president and Germany’s chancellor, coupled with the possibility of a second Donald Trump presidency in the U.S.
Thursday’s agenda includes discussions on the EU’s role in the world, preparing for a reduced U.S. presence in Ukraine, managing a potential U.S.-China trade war, and addressing the situation in the Middle East.
