Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has rejected the suggestion made by newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump to turn Canada into the 51st state of the United States. On Tuesday, Trudeau stated that this would never be possible.
In a post on the microblogging site X, Trudeau wrote, “There is no possibility of turning Canada into any part of the United States. The workers and various communities of our two countries are benefiting as major commercial and security partners with each other.”
After Trudeau announced his resignation as Canada’s Prime Minister last Monday, Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social. In the post, he stated that many residents of neighboring Canada want their country to become the 51st state of the United States. He added that if Canada were to merge with the U.S., the country would not have to pay trade tariffs, and taxes would be reduced.
Following this, reporters at Mar-a-Lago asked Trump if he would use military force to merge Canada with the United States. In response, Trump said he would use “economic force.”
Earlier, Trump had told reporters about the Canada border, stating that the border line was artificially drawn.
Canada exports 75% of its total exports through its southern border, adjacent to the United States. For a long time, Trump has complained that Canada is unfairly benefiting from trade with the U.S. He also threatened to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada to the United States.
Earlier, on the same day, Canada’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly stated, “Trump’s comments reveal that he has no understanding of how Canada became a strong country. We will never back down in the face of threats.”
Due to the declining popularity of his Liberal Party and pressure from party lawmakers, Trudeau announced his resignation as Canada’s Prime Minister on Monday. He will remain in office until a new party leader is elected.
According to Canadian law, elections must be held by October 20. Various public opinion surveys conducted so far indicate that the opposition Conservative Party is likely to win the upcoming election.
Leader of Canada’s opposition, Pierre Poilievre, has also opposed Trump’s statements in a post on X. He wrote, “Canada will never become the 51st state. We are a great and independent country.”
