Actor Michael Douglas took to social media to connect with fans and ask for help as many face major loss from the fires in Los Angeles, Calif. right now.
The Wall Street star shared a new video on Instagram, beginning by saying, “How’s everybody doing? We’re off to a pretty rough start for this new year.”
After noting that he doesn’t personally live in L.A., Douglas referred to the fires as he said, “This is just a nightmare tragedy beyond anything I could’ve comprehended, or probably anybody else,” noting that a “huge, huge number of people that have lost their homes and possibly don’t have any insurance.”
Douglas then stated that his late stepmother and father, Anne and Kirk Douglas, founded an organization called The Douglas Foundation, and he shared that it would be making a contribution to the American Red Cross that he would match.

But Douglas also took the moment as an opportunity to share an important message about politics—or the lack thereof—in this situation: “Not a question of blue states or red states, Republicans or Democrats, this is humanitarian, and this is really, really a major crisis.”
“So please, please, whatever you can, try to help everybody out,” he concluded, asking his fans for any help they can give.
Fans praised Douglas for his kind and giving nature, with comments like, “What an admirable man who cares about others let’s hope others follow your generosity,” and “What a blessing and well said and greatly appreciated such a good humanitarian.”
Many celebrities have spoken out in the wake of the fires in Los Angeles, including Reese Witherspoon and Tori Spelling, who both have homes in the city.
